RIM Ice Melter - How Does RIM Ice Melter Compare to Other Ice Melters?
When choosing an ice melter, you need to consider how the product will affect any surrounding plant life, decorative landscaping and expensive concrete. It is important to understand that many of the ice melters on the market today can cause damage to your grass, landscaping and concrete because of the various chemicals and additives that are used in ice melters.
This chart shows how much ice was melted by each deicer in a 20 minute period at 15 degrees F. Tests were conducted independently according to ASTM
The following are ice melters that are currently on the market today:
- SODIUM CHLORIDE
This material is corrosive and can damage vegetation when used in high concentrations. It can cause damage to concrete if used improperly. - UREA
Commonly used in fertilizers, this material will not chemically damage concrete or metal. However, it does not have a quality Practical Effective Temperature and is less effective compared to other ice melter. - AMMONIUM NITRATE / SULFATE
These products can attack and disintegrate concrete. - RIM® ICE MELTER
Will usually not harm vegetation and has little effect on concrete, but may corrode metal. In an independent study, RIM had the best results for Lowest Theoretical Effective Temperature and Lowest Practical Effective Temperature. RIM’s melting power can be effective in temperatures that fall below -25ºF, while reducing the risk of damaging expensive concrete and landscaping.
